Chapter Twelve

The silence between them was deafening, exaggerated by the drone of the ocean that persisted beneath all else. After their confrontation, he left the cave, visibly shaken by her words. She absently dropped the bracelet on the bench and sat to tend the fire.

He returned after dark, and she knew by the mass of shadows surrounding him that his emotions were still raw. Without a word, he dropped his kill — a fowl of some sort — near the fire, already plucked and gutted, before moving to the opposite side of the cave to brood in the shadows. He stared at the little doll with a troubled, contemplative expression. Whatever the story behind it, she knew he would only tell her when — if — he was ready.

She had wanted to test him but didn’t realize how far over the edge she pushed him until his hand wrapped around her throat. She stared into those orbs of golden light, the tips of his claws pricking her tender skin, and was sure death would come.

Wanting to occupy her mind with something else, she arranged the carcass on a spit over the flames. Despite his anger, he was thoughtful enough to see to her needs.

You spiteful bitch! Is pain what you seek? Is that what you want to push me to?

The hurt still lingered, a dead weight in her belly. It wasn’t the first time she was called such names, but his words wounded her and she didn’t understand why. It wasn’t pain she sought from him. Only truth. Baltherus displayed none of the qualities she expected in a prisoner of this island. It solidified her decision to remain, and made her question The Order further.

She’d riled him to do murder; he punished her with a bruising kiss driven by a deep hurt. She could still feel the warm press of his lips and had to make conscious effort not to raise her fingers to touch her own. The kiss affected her in ways she hadn’t thought possible. The rising sting of tears was all that broke her out of his spell, long enough to place the doll in his grasp, distracting him before they went any further. One more moment in his arms, body flush against his with the taste of him on her tongue, and she would have fallen.

Shifting charred chunks of wood, Amnestria carefully fed more fuel into the fire. Her eyes slid back toward the brooding mass of shadow.

“Your given name is Baltherus,” she said, trying to make her tone conversational. “What is your family name?”

His golden stare flickered, landing on her. He remained otherwise still and silent, for so long that she decided he wasn’t going to answer.

“I have none.”

“No family?” she asked.

He shook his head, eyes moving subtly in the darkness. “I was bred for war. There was no need for familial ties. They existed, but that’s all I knew for certain.”

“You knew them not at all?”

“Not at all.”

Amnestria wasn’t sure if that was a blessing or curse.
